Cancer. Just that one word alone strikes fear, sorrow, and grief into many. I am one of those. Originally, my intentions behind this piece were to merely show a leading cause of death in America. Whilst creating it, I realized just how personal this piece was to me. My family has the BRCA gene, more often known as the breast cancer gene. Many of my family members have this gene, and possibly myself. Half way through creation, my uncle passed away from cancer. I made polyps out of nylon stockings and pillow stuffing. I stacked the balls on top of each other to create a bubbly texture. Stings of nylon were used for the tendrils. I coated the piece in vaseline to give it a shine, and make it seem as though it were bloody. The nylon polyps themselves are very squishy and soft, for more texture. Darker paints were used for value and to emphasize important parts.
